Magnificent views onboard the train

Da Nang also locates itself as the center point on the national railway network. Hai Van Pass stretches in the length of 20km and reaches an altitude of 500 m above sea level where the rail route follows the coast passing through sections of tunnels when the gradients are too steep for a railway line to be constructed. Although the railway line doesn’t ascend and descend as much as the road, the route is nonetheless spectacular with numerous sheer drops, long sharp bends, and fantastic views of the mountains and secluded areas of coastline. If you love travelling by train, then this is something you have to do when you are in Central Vietnam.

Learn about Cham culture

The Cham Museum in Da Nang is the largest collection of Cham sculpture and artwork in the world. The museum displays an intensive and diverse collection of Champa sculpture dating from the 7th to the 15th centuries, when a matriarchal society prevailed. The museum was established at the end of the 19th century by the Ecole Francaise d’Extreme Orient with a collection of artifacts gathered in central Vietnam, from Quang Binh to Binh Dinh. They were then displayed at Le Jardin de Tourane on a small hill by the Han River. This is the site of the present museum. At present, the museum displays approximately 300 sandstone and terra-cotta sculptures

Marble Mountains

Marble Mountains is a group of five limestone peaks situated seven kilometres from downtown Da Nang. The five karsts (called Ngu Hanh Son in Vietnamese) are named after the five elements: Kim (metal), Thuỷ (water), Mộc (wood), Hoả (fire) and Thổ (earth). Over centuries, Marble Mountains has held special significance for the people of Central Vietnam. The ancient Cham revered the karsts as a spiritual site, and Vietnamese emperors from Hue and legendary generals passing through paid visits to the peaks, adding to their store of legends.

Today Marble Mountains is home to a network of caves, tunnels, towers, and pagodas built by Mahayana Buddhists and the Nguyen Dynasty Kings. The structures and shrines blend harmoniously with nature: Vine tendrils drip from above, frangipani and poinciana trees drop their blossoms on the stone paths, and the pagodas’ ornate roofs sparkle in the tropical sun. It’s a setting that easily captures the imagination.
